What if ….India

Last week I visited India, a country in transition. With modern and traditional values living next to each other, some growing pains inevitable.  But when looking at the people of this wonderfully diverse country the possibilities are endless.

One of the signs of how rapid growth creates a shift in paradigm,  is the growing interest in street art. One graffiti artist Daku has risen to the surface to make an important point.  He explains: “I choose garbage dumps and the interiors of rural parts of the city as my canvas. The people who stop to notice a brightly painted Daku graffiti on the wall next to the garbage dump will also spare a moment to see the cleaners and beggars who work around it.”

According to Daku “The shiny mall is the India we want to project but should we turn a blind eye to the needs of the poor who actually make up the population?.” He decided to use the Devanagari script in his paintings “I wants all Indians to be able to read what I am writing. My greatest joy is to meet a few that understand what I am trying to convey.”

Phasebook is a project of graphic designer Jorgen Koolwijk in which he responds to the manufacturability of ones digital life.

Today it is very simple and indeed common to direct ones digital image and create your own life story. Via Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Pinterest you can determine how you want to come across to the world. The pictures and messages that we place on social media are mostly superficial and easily forgotten. Therefore Koolwijk asked himself, through the digital information we leave behind on the internet, who were we in the recent past and how a certain ‘phase’ has influenced our image now? What is the real you and what is our digital image? Phasebook visualises the reality of our digital behaviour.

Exposition & Film about the history of Street Art

OUTSIDE IN: The Story of Art in the Streets from Patrick Simpson on Vimeo.

Outside In is a film about the history of the biggest names within the street art movement and the making of the exposition Art in the Streets in the MOCA . The film features renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Lee Quiñones, Swoon, Futura, Mister Cartoon, Revok, Martha Cooper, Invader to name a few. Director Alex Stapleton (Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel) documents the artist’s creative process, their pitfalls with the law, the poetic impermanence of their craft and the artists’ evolution from the back seat of a cop car to the walls of a well-respected institution.

The exposition will be travelling to the Brooklyn Museum and will be on view March 30-July 8, 2012.,
